400 GSM vs 480 GSM vs 500 GSM Hoodies: What’s the Difference?

A 400, 480 and 500 GSM hoodie look similar in a product photo and feel completely different in the hand. We compare the three weights across thickness, drape, warmth, silhouette, cost, season and brand positioning — from the perspective of a factory that sews them every week.

Most of the heavyweight hoodies we sew at DOLUXE fall into three GSM bands: 400 GSM, 480 GSM and 500 GSM. To a new brand they look interchangeable — "thick hoodie, thick hoodie, thick hoodie". To the customer holding them, they are three entirely different products. Here is how each weight behaves across the seven dimensions that matter, based on what we see in production and what our buyers reorder.

400 GSM Hoodies: The Heavyweight Core

400 GSM is where "heavyweight hoodie" starts in streetwear, and it is the weight we produce most. A 400 GSM French terry or 3-end fleece hoodie is thick enough to feel premium and hold an oversized silhouette, yet soft and wearable enough to be a true daily piece rather than a winter costume.

It drapes naturally — the fabric is heavy, but it still moves with the body. Most brands use 400 GSM for their core hoodie drop because it works in autumn and mild winters, photographs with a clean heavyweight look, and keeps the unit price reasonable enough to retail at a mainstream streetwear level.

480 GSM Hoodies: The Premium Middle Ground

480 GSM is the step our European and US buyers take when a 400 GSM core is selling well and they want a higher-priced hero piece. At 480 GSM the hoodie becomes noticeably stiffer: it holds a boxy cut almost on its own, the shoulders stay square, and the drape turns from "falling" to "hanging" — that crisp, deliberate line premium buyers recognise immediately.

The extra 80 grams also add real warmth, pushing the hoodie from cool-season into genuine cold-season territory. In production, 480 GSM demands more care: denser fabric is harder to feed through sewing machines evenly, so seam puckering and collar distortion become risks without skilled operators and proper machine tension settings.

500 GSM Hoodies: The Statement Weight

500 GSM is the top of our standard hoodie ladder, and it behaves differently from everything below it. This is not a daily hoodie; it is a garment with the presence of a jacket. The fabric is rigid enough that an unfilled hoodie stands up on its own when laid flat. Customers describe it as "armour" — which is exactly why it sells.

Because the fabric holds shape so aggressively, 500 GSM rewards a carefully designed boxy pattern; in a sloppy pattern the stiffness exaggerates every mistake. It is a deep-winter, cold-climate, statement-capsule product. In production it is the slowest and most demanding of the three: heavier needle penetration, stronger thread, reinforced stress points, and watchful shrinkage control, because dense fleece moves differently in the wash than a lighter knit.

Seven Dimensions, One Weight Choice

Thickness & warmth

Every GSM step adds genuine thermal mass. 400 GSM is autumn-weight, 480 GSM is winter-weight, 500 GSM is deep-winter. If your customer lives in a mild climate, 500 GSM will simply sit in the drawer.

Drape & silhouette

Lightweight fabrics fall; heavyweight fabrics hang; super-heavyweight fabrics hold. For a soft, lived-in oversized look, 400 GSM drapes best. For a sharp boxy silhouette that keeps its lines, 480–500 GSM is the better canvas — the fabric does half the styling work.

Comfort & wearability

Higher GSM is not automatically better. 500 GSM hoodies are heavy on the shoulders, slow to dry, and too warm for indoor wear in heated spaces. Many buyers who love the look of 500 GSM end up wearing the 400 GSM piece daily. Order both for honest comparison.

Cost

Weight is cost. The jump from 400 to 500 GSM increases fabric consumption by roughly a quarter before dyeing, cutting and sewing are even considered — and heavier fabric also slows sewing and raises freight. Plan the retail price before you fall in love with the heaviest swatch.

Season & brand positioning

Our most common brand strategy: a 400 GSM core available all year for the entry price, a 480 GSM hero for the premium line, and a limited 500 GSM capsule released in November–January as the brand's statement piece. The three weights become three price tiers instead of three versions of the same hoodie.

What We See Buyers Order at DOLUXE

Across the 400–500 GSM hoodies we manufacture, patterns are consistent:

  • New streetwear brands almost always start at 400 GSM — enough heavyweight credibility at a viable first-drop price.
  • Scandinavian and northern EU brands lean to 480 GSM as their core because real winters justify the warmth.
  • Statement and collab capsules use 500 GSM to create a "you have to feel it to believe it" moment at the pop-up or in the unboxing.
  • Brands that skip 480 and jump straight to 500 usually come back to 400–480 for their everyday range after seeing return rates on the heaviest piece.

Whatever band you choose, three things decide whether the hoodie feels premium or just heavy: the yarn and knit quality, the pre-shrinking and stabilisation, and the construction details — double-needle hems, reinforced pockets, a collar rib that matches the fabric weight. GSM is the headline; these are the fine print.

FAQ: Heavyweight Hoodie GSM Questions

Is 500 GSM hoodie too heavy?

For everyday wear in mild climates, yes. 500 GSM is a cold-weather statement piece — heavy, warm and slow-drying. If you need one hoodie that works across autumn and winter, 400–480 GSM is the more wearable range.

480 GSM vs 500 GSM — which is better for an oversized fit?

Both hold oversized shapes well, but differently: 480 GSM drapes with a clean, natural heavy fall; 500 GSM holds a sharper, more sculpted boxy line. Choose 480 for a wearable premium oversized piece, 500 for a rigid statement silhouette.

What GSM hoodie do premium streetwear brands use?

Most premium streetwear hoodies fall between 380 and 480 GSM. 500 GSM and above is used selectively for winter capsules and hero pieces rather than core programs.

Is 400 GSM hoodie warm enough for winter?

In moderate winters, yes — especially with a brushed back or as a layered piece. In severe cold, step up to 480–500 GSM or plan the hoodie as a mid-layer.

We produce 400 GSM, 480 GSM and 500 GSM hoodies in-house at DOLUXE and can ship physical swatches of all three so you can feel the difference before sampling. Start with the custom hoodie solution page or send us your target spec.
